Golden Temple Etiquette

Before entering the compound, remove your shoes and socks (there are chappal – sandal – stands at the entrances), wash your feet in the shallow foot baths and cover your head; scarves can be borrowed (no charge) or bought from nearby souvenir hawkers for ₹20. Tobacco and alcohol are strictly prohibited within the premises. If you want to sit beside the tank, sit cross-legged and do not dangle your feet in the water. Photography is permitted from the walkway surrounding the pool, but not inside the Golden Temple itself. Staff-wielding, blue-robed temple guards called jathhedars patrol the compound around the clock; approach them for any assistance or query regarding etiquette.
