Marimo Balls

Marimo balls are bizarre little spheres of green algae that are thought to grow naturally in colonies in only a handful of places in the world (including Mývatn and Lake Akan in Japan). The name marimo is the Japanese word for ‘algae ball’ – around Mývatn, the locals call 'em kúluskítur, which literally means ‘ball of shit’. Swing by Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum to check them out – they live in the small pool of lake water in the exhibition space – ask for assistance to locate them. Recent studies marked the rapid decline of marimo in Mývatn, but they seemed to stage a slight comeback in the summers of 2016 and 2017.
