The Golden Circle in detail

Flights & getting there

A huge array of tours take in the Golden Circle; otherwise Reykjavík Excursions offers a no-frills bus service. It's also very easy to drive on your own, which allows flexibility in routes and timing.

Reykjavík Excursions runs the 'Iceland On Your Own' service between Reykjavík and Akureyri, stopping at Geysir, Gullfoss, Kjölur Highlands and Kerlingarfjöll en route. There's one daily mid-June to early September, leaving at 8am from Reykjavík's BSÍ bus terminal. Fares cost 17,900kr all the way to Akureyri, with around 30-minute stops at sights such as Gullfoss along the way. Passengers can choose to leave the bus at each sight, and pay one-way fares at the start of their trip to their chosen stop (for example, to Gullfoss it's 5000kr one way).

There are currently no buses to Þingvellir, aside from full tours ticking off all the major sights (bookable with Reykjavík Excursions, plus Bus Travel Iceland, Arctic Adventures and more), from 6750kr.
