Introduction

You'll see the glistening 60m-high Seljalandsfoss waterfall thundering off the lower escarpments of Eyjafjallajökull volcano from miles away. It's a popular stop on the Ring Road (Rte 1) and a pick-up point for Þórsmörk-bound buses (Þórsmörk is impossible to reach by regular vehicles due to the big rivers that are necessary to cross).

The road to Þórsmörk (Rte 249/F249) begins just east of the Markarfljót river and alongside Seljalandsfoss, and leads north off the Ring Road. It quickly turns into a spectacular 4WD-only road.
