Reykjahlíð and Vógar (a small cluster of buildings along the lake’s eastern shore) have the most choices, along with large hotels around the lake (Hótel Gígur's is one of the best). Note that wine and beer are only available in restaurants.

The local food speciality is the moist, cakelike rye bread, called hverabrauð (often translated as ‘geysir bread’), which is slow-baked underground using geothermal heat.
