Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon Day Trip from Reykjavik

Enjoy a well-paced Golden Circle tour followed by a soak in a geothermal lagoon. The day starts with a complimentary pick-up from hotels and guesthouses in the greater Reykjavik area. Pick-up starts at 10am and once all guests have been collected, the tour will leave Harpa, music and conference hall in downtown Reykjavik at approximately 10:30am. Our coach size depends on the number of passengers booked onto the tour, but it could be a 16 seater coach or a bigger coach with 50 seats. We start the tour in Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park where the Eurasian and the North American plates are slowly drifting apart. You can actually walk down one of the rifts that has been formed as a result of the drift. From there we drive past Laugarvatn over to Geysir where we'll stop for a short lunch (own expense) and a walk around the geothermal area where the hot-spring Strokkur spouts water up to 20 meters in the air (65 ft). The next destination is Gullfoss waterfall in Hvítá river which is made up of melt-water from the glacier Langjökull, the second largest glacier in Iceland. You'll then end the day with a delightful soak in the warm water of the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir. The lagoon is the oldest pool in Iceland and filled with geothermal water that flows from the nearby hot springs. The water temperature is pretty comfortable (38-40°C / 97-104°F). The entrance fee and use of a towel are included in the tour price. From the lagoon we then head back to Reykjavík across Hellisheiði heath. The tour includes short, relatively easy walks on the sites visited. We recommend that you dress warmly because the weather in Iceland can change very quickly.

Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon Day Trip from Reykjavik

Your tour will start with pick up at 8 am from your pick up location. The pick up can take up to 30 minutes. From there, you'll travel ~1.5 hours to the village of Fludir (in the Golden Circle area) to relax at the Secret Lagoon. The steam rising into the air gives the place a magical feeling, and the water stays at 38-40 degrees Celsius all year. Enjoy a nice warm bath even when it's freezing outside. In the whole area, there are several geothermal spots and a little geyser which erupts every 5 minutes. Included in the tour is admission to the Lagoon; please don't forget to bring your bathing suit. After 2 hours at the Lagoon, you embark upon the quintessential Icelandic tour to the Geysir geothermal area in the Haukadalur valley, where the Strokkur fountain geyser spouts water high into the air every few minutes, before visiting the majestic “Golden Waterfall” of Gullfoss, considered by many to be Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall. Then onward to the historic geological wonder Þingvellir National Park, which is not only the seat of the world’s oldest still-functioning parliament (where the Icelandic Alþingi first convened in 930 AD) but is considered the best place on earth to view the geologic meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, pulling apart year by year.

Originally built in 1891, the ‘Gamla Laugin’ as it eventually came to be known, was Iceland’s first swimming pool. For decades thereafter, Gamla Laugin was virtually abandoned until its present day owner decided to give it new life in 2005. By this time, the pool had long been forgotten and for a few years he used it as his own private heated swimming pool just for himself and a few friends, remaining a secret for several years. That is how The Secret Lagoon got its enigmatic name. A natural hot spring feeds the lagoon with 38-39°C water  that bubbles up from deep within the earth at a rate of 10 litres per second, constantly replenishing itself so that there is a steady supply of fresh clean water in the pool at any given time. The Secret Lagoon offers brand new facilities next the hot spring area in Fludir. Facilities available: changing rooms, showers, resting rooms, bar and restaurant area. With the completion of changing rooms, showering facilities, outside deck, walkways and a small café, The Secret Lagoon quietly opened in the summer of 2014.

Northern Lights and Secret Lagoon Trip by Super Jeep from Reykjavik

Bask in the soothing waters of the Secret Lagoon hot spring while marvelling over the incredible Northern Lights. This classic Icelandic winter experience is the perfect combination of relaxation and inspiration, and should not be missed by anyone travelling to Iceland between August and April. You will be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík from 5:30 pm, in a Super Jeep designed for your comfort. These jeeps have a limited number of seats, so you can be guaranteed that your tour will be as personal and intimate as possible. Once your group is gathered, you will head straight out of the city to the charming village of Flúðir. Here, you will find the Secret Lagoon, immersed in nature. This is Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, established in 1891, and is a place where history and natural beauty combine. The steam rising from the pool and the surrounding geothermal area give the Secret Lagoon an otherworldly appearance, more similar fantasy than reality. The only thing more magical than staring at it, however, is basking in its pristine waters, which year-round are between 38 and 39° Celsius (100 to 102° Fahrenheit). The pool itself has been kept in its natural state, to preserve its history and character; all modern amenities, however, such as changing facilities, showers, and an on-site cafe, have been established to make your stay as carefree as possible. It is thus possible to kick back and relax in comfort, with your eyes on the night sky, awaiting the arrival of the Northern Lights. Watching the auroras descend from the canopy of stars above while basking in the lagoon is an incredible experience. The dancing, swirling lights, usually green but occasionally red, white, purple and blue, will captivate you for hours, and make sure that this evening will stay with you for life. If you are not lucky enough to see the lights from the Secret Lagoon, do not despair; your Super Jeep will come in very handy. With its ability to take rough trails off the beaten track that buses cannot, it is possible for your guide to take you to the darkest, most secluded areas with the least cloud cover so that you can have another opportunity to enjoy this rare and bewitching sight. As with many things in nature, however, there are no guarantees that the aurora borealis will show. If they are acting elusive and your guide does not believe they will come out, you will get to visit more hot-springs instead, or perhaps even go caving as an alternative, based on the desires of your group.  So grab your camera, warm clothes, and swimsuit, and get ready for this enchanting, awe-inspiring tour. Combining hot springs, the Northern Lights, and incredible nature, this trip will let you enjoy a classic Icelandic winter experience in comfort and style. Book your place now.
