Inland from Breiðdalsvík is Breiðdalur ('Wide Valley'). It's a quiet, panoramic place to explore, with the broad valley nestled beneath colourful rhyolite peaks and cut by a popular fishing river, the Breiðdalsá.

Rte 95 travels through the valley – this road was part of the Ring Road (Rte 1), but in 2017 the Ring Road was re-routed via the coast. That change makes this part of the east extra secluded – there are few tourists out this way, meaning you can have parts of it all to yourself.
