Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Private Day Tour from Reykjavik

The tour starts from Reykjavik, heading west to pass through the tunnel under the Hvalfjordur fjord toward the beautiful little town of Borgarnes, situated in astonishing surroundings. From there we drive along the outstretched arm of the peninsula, to the north-west passing dramatic coastlines and abundant volcanic features including the Snaefellsjokull glacier. Snæfellsnes peninsula stretches out into the North Atlantic Ocean with its magnificent snow-capped glacier, Snaefellsjokull, covering beneath the volcano. Snaefellsjokull is an impressive glacier with a height of 1446 meters at its highest point. This volcano is one of the most famous sites of Iceland, primarily due to the Jules Verne novel "A Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), in which the protagonists finds the entrance leading to the center of the earth on the Snaefellsjokull. On this tour, we also visit the beautiful little place of Budir passing through the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar. On the north coast, we shall see Olafsvik, a charming old fishing village and Iceland's oldest trading town, which dates back to 1687. We stop at Stykkisholmur town, built around a natural harbor by Danish and Norwegian merchants. This charming fishing town is the largest on the Snaefellsnes, located on a promontory overlooking the beautiful Breidarfjordur bay. The majestic Snaefellsjokull gives you breathtaking views over the peninsula and sometimes people say that the glacier is surrounded by a unique energy field. There are no doubts that this area holds a special fascination for many. It is also considered a paradise for photographers.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula Small Group Tour

Much of the attraction of Snaefellsnes lies in the natural history of the area and we may be lucky enough to see seals, large bird colonies and possibly even whales from the shoreline, as much of the day is spent on the coast. As a result, the day also includes several other short stops depending upon what we come across in the way of wildlife, on weather, road conditions and time constraints.  These extra stops will be at the discretion of your guide on the day,  but having this flexibility makes the tour exciting and slightly different each time.Driving north from Reykjavik through the Hvalfjordur tunnel and the small town of Borgarnes, we continue north until we reach Snaefellsness peninsula and although this journey is quite long, around 2 hours, the scenery is very rewarding and we will make a short comfort stop at Borgarnes. Stretching out into the ocean directly west from Iceland, this peninsula has a bit of everything that you can find elsewhere in Iceland.  There are fabulous coastal roads, small fishing villages tucked in at the base of spectacular fjords and mountains, black sand beaches and dramatic coastal cliffs adorned by bird colonies in summer.  There are also surreal landscapes of lava fields and mountains offering an amazing array of geological features and even a small Ice-cap with glaciers. We spend the day exploring the stunning coastline with visits to Arnarstapi coastal cliffs of columnar basalt and during the summer season, nesting bird colonies. Along the coast we spend time exploring the black sand beaches and lava stacks at Djupalon and stop off at one of the small fishing villages surrounded by mountains and nestling in sheltered bays. Once we get to the north side of the peninsula, we visit a small gold sand beach (Skardsvik) that sits at the edge of a black lava field and stop to view Kirkjufell mountain and the pretty waterfall of Kirkjufellsfoss.Throughout much of our journey around the peninsula we will have views of the Snaefellsjokull glacier and will be surrounded by the natural beauty of high mountains and fjords. The driving distance of the day is around 400 kilometres and total driving time is around 4 hours 30 minutes, but this is divided into shorter journeys between the stops. Lunch is not included but you will be able to buy something to eat at a cafe/restaurant during the day.
