Those planning on travelling extensively in the country might consider buying a Hungary Card (www.hungarycard.hu), which comes in three denominations (basic/standard/plus 5000/8000/12,000Ft). Depending on the denomination, benefits may include free admission to many museums nationwide; a 50% discount on a number of return train fares and some bus and boat travel, as well as other museums and attractions; up to 20% off selected accommodation; and 25% off the price of the Budapest Card. Cards are available at Tourinform offices nationwide.
A number of regions in Hungary offer region-specific discount cards. These include, among others, the Budapest Card, Balaton Card and Badacsony Card.
Student & Youth Cards
The International Student Identity Card (ISIC; www.isic.org; 2610Ft) gives students many discounts on certain forms of transport, and cheap admission to museums and other sights. If you’re aged under 26 but not a student, you can apply for ISIC’s International Youth Travel Card (IYTC; 2050Ft) or the Euro<26 card (2500Ft) issued by the European Youth Card Association (EYCA; www.eyca.org), both of which offer the same discounts as the student card.
