    Csinos Presszó

Between the alfresco garden with mismatched furniture painted in bright pastels and the fairy lights strung from the trees, it's easy to see why Csinos packs in relaxed patrons. A small snacks menu accompanies a list of inventive drinks (a number of the cordials are house-made), and in the afternoons it's also a prime spot to grab a coffee.

    Pécsi Kávé

Tucked away in a green courtyard is one of Pécs' best coffee spots. Inside, it's a quirky cross between a study space (complete with cute reading lights) and a bar, complete with old-fashioned weighing scales and bags of roasted beans. Knock back a ristretto or sip one of their glorious mint lemonades in the garden in warm weather.

    Egylet Craft Beer Pub

It's a rare phenomenon for a place to successfully wear three hats at once, yet Egylet manages it with flair. It's primarily a craft beer pub with 12 changing Hungarian brews on tap. It's also a terrific place for grilled meats (mostly Balkan – see the map on the wall). To top it off, there's the excellent coffee. Full marks.

    Amper Klub

This big club has been revamped lately with a state-of-the-art sound system, and it features all-night DJ sets with illustrious guests working the decks. It attracts mainly 20something trendoids who boogie to the house and techno or sip cocktails and look pretty in the outdoor garden.

With a curiously boat-shaped wooden ceiling, this snug bar provides a safe haven for lovers of good beer. Apart from craft beers from all over Hungary, there are some international offerings and the bar staff are good at making suggestions. We have one for them: add some decent music and this bar will go straight from good to amazing.

    Cooltour Café

Cooltour embodies so many cool things it's hard to choose what we love best. It's a ruin pub, yet it's open all day, making it fine for both coffee and snacks or cocktails and mellow chit-chat. It's on the main drag, but its rear garden feels like a secret spot. Occasional live music and parties in the evening.

    Nappali Bar

Nappali is one of the hippest gathering spots in town for a coffee or a glass of wine. Its outdoor seating fills up on warm, lazy evenings, and there's live music some nights. For breakfast (from 1500Ft) or lunch, head next door to sister-establishment Reggeli Bar, open from 8am to 3pm daily.

    Tüke Borház

This wine bar tucked away in a stone house in the hills above Pécs offers a fantastic selection of local wines served by gracious and knowledgable staff. The vast terrace has panoramic views across the city and if you're feeling peckish, cold cuts and grilled meats are always on hand.

'Drinking coffee is sexy' says the sign outside this thimble-sized place. We agree. Is this a cafe? A wine bar? A bit of both, actually, with carefully chosen local wines by the glass, seriously good coffee, and a central location to hang out and people-watch.

    Pelso Café

This modern two-level cafe boasts a fantastic terrace overlooking the southern end of the main square. It does decent cakes, teas from around the world, and coffee concoctions (coffee and cake from 500Ft). But we like it best as a prime spot for an al fresco sundowner – the wine and beer list is small, but the vantage point is lovely.

    Káptalani Borozó

This funny little ‘wine bar’ opposite the Csontváry Museum has outdoor seating on a tiny terrace next to an early Christian site and serves white Cirfandli, a speciality of the Mecsek Hills, in spades. There’s a story behind all those padlocks on the gate just down the street.

  • Nightlife in Pécs

Open only in the warmer months, this outdoor cafe is a quiet piece of heaven with shaded tables placed amid a jungle-like patch of greenery.

    Club 5 Music Pub

This hard-to-find basement bar transforms itself into a small (and very central) club on weekends.
