Eger's main train station is south of the Archbishop's Garden. To reach the city centre, walk north on Deák Ferenc utca and then head along pedestrian Széchenyi István utca, Eger’s main drag. The Egervár train station, which serves Szilvásvárad and other points northeast, is about a five-minute walk north of Eger Castle.

Up to seven direct trains a day connect to/from Budapest’s Keleti train station (2520Ft, two hours, 140km). Eger is also on a minor train line linking Putnok and Füzesabony; change at the latter for Miskolc (1490Ft, 1¼ hours, 74km) or Debrecen (2200Ft, 2½ hours, 120km).

From Egervár train station, there are services to Szilvásvárad (420Ft, one hour, 34km).
