Welcome to Puerto Lempira
Situated on the inland side of the Laguna de Caratasca, Puerto Lempira is the largest town in the Moskitia. If you've come through the region overland from the Honduran side, you'll feel like you've reached a metropolis, although in reality it's just a large village with mostly dirt roads, a large pier, three supermarkets, a hospital, an ATM and good air connections. It's a friendly enough place if you say 'buenos dias' to people. The drug cartels are still going strong here, but they've learned to keep their activities fairly low-profile and are not a threat if you use common sense and keep out of their business.
The favorite day trip from Puerto Lempira is to the serene Miskito village of Mistruk, 18km south of town on the banks of the lovely Laguna de Tansing. You can hire a truck to take you for around L1000.
