Port-au-Prince & Around in detail

Flights & getting there

Air

International flights depart from Aéroport International Toussaint Louverture and domestic flights from Aérogare Guy Malary; the two are adjacent on the northern outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Numerous international carriers offer services to and from Aéroport International Toussaint Louverture, including JetBlue Airways, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Air France, Air Antilles Express, Insel Air, InterCaribbean Airways, Delta, Cubana, Copa, Aeromexico and Avianca.

Airlines running domestic flights to and from Aérogare Guy Malary include Sunrise Airways and Mission Aviation Fellowship.

It takes around 30 to 45 minutes to reach the city center from the airports, depending on the time of day. Airport taxis are run by the Association des Chauffeurs Guides d’Haïti. Fares should be between US$25 and US$40. You can take a taptap to or from the airports (HTG10); they wait outside the terminals and drop passengers off at the corner of Blvd Toussaint Louverture and Rte de Delmas.

Bus

Port-au-Prince has no central bus station; instead, there is a series of mildly anarchic departure points according to the destination. Most buses and taptaps leave when full – exceptions are for Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes and Jérémie, which you can buy seats for in advance.

For destinations in the south and southwest, go to Estasyon Portail Léogâne. Taptaps go from here to Jacmel (US$4, three hours), Les Cayes (US$10, four hours) and all points in between. Large air-conditioned Transport Chic buses leave for Les Cayes (US$10, five hours) from just north of Sylvio Cator Stadium.

For Jérémie (US$12, nine hours), Grand'anse Tours buses leave from north of the Champs de Mars, on the southwest corner of Rue Geffard and Rue Pavée.

For taptaps to Cap-Haïtien (US$12, seven hours) go to Estasyon O’Cap. Taptaps to Gonaïves (US$6, three hours) and the Côte des Arcadins also leave from here. Note that this area is considered unsafe, and that several companies run large, air-conditioned buses to Cap-Haïtien from near the airport, including Sans Souci Tours.

Buses to Croix des Bouquets (US$1, 30 minutes) depart from the junction of Rue des Fronts Forts and Rue du Centre. Taptaps to Kenscoff (HTG20, 30 minutes) leave from Pl St-Pierre in Pétionville.

For Santo Domingo in the DR, Caribe Tours, Metro Bus and Capital Coach Line all have daily departures at around 8am, arriving in Santo Domingo nine hours later, with tickets costing around US$40, plus border taxes.

Car & Motorcycle

Many of the car-rental companies are near the airport.
