You’d be hard-pressed to find a sense of urgency in Haiti’s fourth-largest city. More popularly known as Aux Cayes, Les Cayes is an old rum port sheltered by a series of reefs that has sent many ships to their graves (its first recorded victim was one of Columbus’ ships on his final voyage to Hispaniola). Pirates were another threat, notably from nearby Île-à-Vache. Today Les Cayes has little to offer the visitor, although it’s a good stopping-off point for other destinations in the south.
