This easy-to-moderate 4km walk starts just below Zakros village and follows a dry riverbed through a narrow and (at times) soaring canyon with a riot of vegetation and wild herbs before emerging close to Zakros Palace right above the beach at Kato Zakros. For a shorter walk, pick up one of two trailheads on the road to Kato Zakros. 'Entrance A' is about 3km along, while 'Entrance B' is another 500m further on from there. A taxi back to Zakros costs about €12.
The canyon is also named Gorge of the Dead or Valley of the Dead because the Minoans used to buried their dead in caves on the rugged cliffs. The hike marks the final section of the more than 10,000km-long E4 European Path, which kicks off in Portugal.
