A densely populated area around Myrina boasts a few nice beaches and plenty of accommodation – especially at Platy, a scenic bay 3km south of the capital. The island's main road heads southeast, passing villages with quirky museums and interesting historic sites. North of Myrina, the road left after Kaspakas village accesses the appealing Agios Ioannis Beach, set nicely beneath an overhanging volcanic slab. Hidden away in the mountainous hinterland, a cluster of villages around Sardes serve as a convenient pit stop on the way to the seldom visited sand dunes of Gomati Bay on the northern coast.
