Flights & getting there
Buses and trains connect the main towns, but to explore smaller towns or the wilderness, you'll need either a car or a lot of extra time to allow for limited bus service. The Egnatia Odos runs across Thrace to the Turkish border, and smaller roads are in good repair, but watch out for mud and flooding in spring, and ice in winter.
Dimokritous Airport, just outside Alexandroupoli, connects to Athens. For Xanthi and other parts of eastern Thrace, Kavala's Alexander the Great Airport is more convenient. With many more international options, though, Thessaloniki may be worth the extra distance.
