Sougia has a pleasant 1km-long grey sand-and-pebble beach, but its drop-off is quick, so it’s not ideal for families with small children.
Like most south coast villages, Sougia is great hiking territory. The most popular walk is to the archaeological site of Lissos some 3km away. A taxi to the Samaria Gorge trailhead is €60, but with a day or two advance notice, staff at the taxi kiosk can put together a pool of hikers to share the cost. If you don’t like the Samaria crowds, head for the Agia Irini Gorge instead.
