Flights & getting there
Small Sitia Municipal Airport is about 1km north of the town centre and handles domestic flights to Athens, Alexandroupoli, Iraklio, Kassos and Rhodes as well as seasonal charter flights from Germany and Scandinavia. A taxi into town costs €6 to €8.
Ferries dock about 1km north of the town centre. Anek/Aegeon Pelagos Sea Lines has service to Anafi (€20, eight hours), Chalki (€20, 8½ hours), Diafani (€18, six hours), Iraklio (€16, three hours), Karpathos (€19, 4½ hours), Kasos (€12, 2¾ hours), Milos (€26, 14¼ hours), Piraeus (€44, 21½ hours), Rhodes (€28, 10½ hours) and Santorini (€28, 10 hours) on a seasonally changing schedule. Prices quoted are for deckchair seating.
Connections from Sitia’s bus station include four buses daily to Ierapetra (€6.90, 1¾ hours), five buses to Iraklio (€16, three hours), six to Agios Nikolaos (€8.30, 1¾ hours). Two buses leave for Zakros on Monday, Tuesday and Friday (€4.50, one hour). No services on Sunday.
From the main taxi stand, sample fares are €22 to Moni Toplou, €35 to Vaï, €50 to Zakros, €57 to Kato Zakros and €170 to Iraklio.
An easy way to hike Zakros Gorge on a day trip from Sitia is by hiring a private driver like Yiannis, who can pick you up in Sitia, take you to the trailhead, pick you back up post-hike in Kato Zakros and drive you back to Sitia for €60.
