Worth a Trip: Meganisi
The elongated island of Meganisi, off Lefkada’s southeastern corner, is an easy boat ride from Nydri, on Lefkada's east coast. Most people visit on a day trip, but with its verdant hills still thick with woodland, and turquoise bays fringed by pebbled beaches with a minimum of development, the island's well worth a longer, more relaxed stay. From the ferry dock at Porto Spilia, climb the steep road or stairway to reach the narrow lanes and bougainvillea-bedecked houses of Spartohori, on the plateau above. The next inlet to the east holds pretty Vathy, Meganisi’s second harbour, 1km below the village of Katomeri.
Ferries from Nydri sail to both Porto Spilia and Vathy (per person/car €1.90/12.90, 25 to 40 minutes, three to four daily); buy tickets from Borsalino Travel. Local buses connect Spartohori and Vathy five to seven times daily, via Katomeri, but bringing your own vehicle is recommended.
