The Birth of Aphrodite

Kythira was famous in antiquity as the birthplace of Aphrodite. As described by Hesiod and painted by Botticelli, the goddess of love, desire and beauty rose resplendent from the foam upon a giant scallop, possibly off the islet of Avgo (‘egg’) off Kapsali. Confusingly, she’s also said to have re-emerged near Pafos in Cyprus, so both islands haggle over the claim.
