Head to Cape Gero Angeli, at the northernmost tip of the island and 12km from Hora, to the alleged final resting place of Homer, Greece's greatest poet. It's a beautiful drive, with panoramic sea views at the tomb itself.
In Hora, climb up past the windmills to the Odysseus Elytis amphitheatre for stupendous views.
En route to Psathi is Paleokastro, the remains of a Byzantine castle perched atop a seaside cliff.
Ios is well known for its beaches. Those reachable by paved road include Manganari – a wide sweep of white sand on the south coast, reached by your own wheels (45 minutes from Hora), bus or by caïque in summer. Mylopotas is equally beautiful and is a major water sports centre as well. Agia Theodoti has the bluest of blue water and is favoured by Greek families. Nearby Psathi is quieter with a popular taverna and is an ace windsurfing venue. Plenty of other fine beaches are only accessible by caïque.
