The village proper starts at Plateia Pounta; on its north side, it stands on the edge of a formidable cliff. Just west of here is the medieval kastro, a small tangle of narrow alleys spanned by low archways. It dates from when Marco Sanudo ruled the island in the 13th century. The balconies of the traditional houses blaze with bougainvillea, and a few whitewashed chapels add charm.
