    About 5km east and uphill from Hania town is the spot where great statesman Eleftherios Venizelos is buried. The site and its neighbouring owl-themed cafe-bar enjoy panoramic views of Hania. It’s a popular hang-out for students from the nearby technical university and does delicious snacks and desserts. A taxi from/to Hania costs about €8.

    Lafkas Brewery

    Michalis and his Belgian wife, Aurelie, run this nanobrewery 4.5km southwest of Hania. They brew two beers: a triple-hop pale ale and an annual special collaborating with local producers, which might be a stout using Kross cold brew. Buy a bottle (€2.50) to enjoy at the outdoor tables next to a wall-sized mural and with views of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains). Michalis or Aurelie will give you a quick brewery tour, too.

    Rudi's Beerhouse

    Austrian-born long-time Hania resident Rudi is a knowledgeable beer buff who runs the show at this pub a block back from the harbour. There are Trappist beers on tap and a huge range of mostly Greek, German and Belgian bottled beers. It's also one of the few places apart from the brewery where you'll find Cretan Brewery pale ale on tap.

    Look for the psychedelic decorated facade at this tiny bar with a bamboo-covered terrace. The owner spins vinyl from his collection of over 700 albums, and there's a great selection of Greek beers as well as bar snacks.
