Frangokastello: The 'Ghost' Castle

Frangokastello was built by the Venetians to guard against pirates and feisty local Sfakian rebels. On 17 May 1828, during the War of Independence, many Cretan fighters were killed here by the Turks. According to legend their ghosts – the drosoulites – can be seen marching past the fortress in the early dawn on the battle’s anniversary.
