Travel with Children

Athens is short on playgrounds, but there's plenty to keep kids amused and children are welcome everywhere. The shady National Gardens has a playground, duck pond and small (if somewhat dismal) zoo. There is also an enclosed, shaded playground in the Zappeio Gardens. A tram ride south gets you to the much bigger facilities at Stavros Niarchos Park and Flisvos Park; the latter also has an outdoor cinema and an excellent shadow-puppet theatre.

The Museum of Greek Children’s Art has a room set aside where children can learn about Ancient Greece. The Hellenic Children's Museum was in the process of moving in 2017, and the new facility was developing exhibits.

Attica Zoological Park has an expanding collection of big cats, birds, reptiles and other animals, including a monkey forest and 'Cheetahland'. It's near the airport.

Escape the heat and amuse the kids with a virtual-reality tour of Ancient Greece at the Hellenic Cosmos, or explore the universe at the impressive Planetarium. At the War Museum, kids can climb into the cockpit of a WWII plane and other aircraft.

Head 6km west of Syntagma Sq for the enormous Allou Fun Park & Kidom, Athens' biggest amusement-park complex. Kidom is aimed at younger children.
