Enjoy a full-day journey to Nemea, Greece’s historic and premier wine region, to learn traditions and taste wines at 3 different vineyards. The tour includes a culinary lunch experience with samplings of traditional Greek dishes. Nemea is renown for its winemaking since ancient times and has the most wineries in Greece.
We leave Athens early for our full-day journey to Greece’s most renown wine region, Nemea, with roots to antiquity. On our way to the Peloponnese, we will be traversing the hilly landscape, full of vineyards, a real feast for the eyes.Nemea is deemed “the crown jewel” of the wine industry. Situated in the Peloponnese, it first became known from the feat of Hercules and the extermination of the lion that terrorized the locals. During the Byzantine period it was called “Agios Georgios” (Saint George) from the homonymous Byzantine church from which the well-known Agiorgitiko grape variety was named after. Rich in aroma and red color, the Agiorgitiko has been the trademark of the area for 2.500 years. We will visit 3 wineries on our journey. Please note: the precise wineries may vary and the below names are not guaranteed. Our first stop is at a modern, winemaking facility which produces both magnificent and unique wines. We see the state-of-the-art machinery and hear the philosophy behind this leading contemporary wine industry in Greece. We sample a selection of award winning wines offered with an assortment of cheeses. We continue our wine experience at a family-run business, handed down from one generation to the next. Employing natural vinification methods, this winery produces additive-free white and red wines. They aim to “create wines with unaltered character of the place, wines that express its authenticity”.After the tour of the facilities and winetasting, lunch will be awaiting us. The menu will include traditional dishes such as fresh spinach pie, moussaka, greek salad, grilled vegetables, and stuffed grape leaves. After lunch, we visit the Ancient ruins in Nemea. We have a brief tour of the archaeological site and learn about its important place in Greek history. Our final wine experience takes place at a privately-owned vineyards located in Cleonae, a short drive. Although cultivating numerous varieties, their prime product is Agiorgitiko. Their philosophy is reflected on their following statement “Our wines are a reflection of the vineyards of Nemea and harvest time is a celebration that brings us its gifts, the very same we would like you to enjoy in your glass”. In 2017 this winery won a silver metal at the 22nd International Mundus Vini wine contest in Germany as well as a silver metal the International Wine and Spirit Competition in Thessaloniki. We have a winery tour and tasting, comparing and contrasting our remarkable day visiting Nemea's wine region, then depart to arrive in Athens before dinner time.
