Munich has southern Germany's most exciting restaurant scene. In Munich's kitchens the best dishes make use of fresh regional, seasonal and organic ingredients. The Bavarian capital is also the best place between Vienna and Paris for internationally flavoured dining, especially for Italian, Afghan, Vietnamese and Turkish food, and even vegetarians can look forward to something other than noodles and salads.
Self-Catering
The dominant supermarket chains are Aldi, Penny, Tengelmann, Rewe, Kaufland and Lidl, with multiple branches scattered throughout the city. For a more upscale (and pricier) selection, head to the supermarket in the basement of the Kaufhof department store or the Viktualienmarkt. Deep-pocketed gourmets have a couple of venerable destinations to look forward to: Dallmayr is famous for its coffee but has so much more, including cheeses, ham, truffles, wine, caviar and exotic foods from every corner of the earth.
