Advance Planning

Three months before Make sure you have booked accommodation, especially over the summer. If you want to see a Bayern Munich football match, you'd better get online around now as tickets sell out fast.

One month before Book tickets online to attractions such as the BMW plant tour or the Allianz Arena tour.

One week before Book walking and other city tours online.

Resources

  • Munich Tourist Board (www.muenchen-tourist.de) A thoroughly researched and curated website on all things Munich.
  • MuseumsPortalMünchen (www.museen-in-muenchen.de) Info on all the city's museums gathered together in one place.
  • MUNICHfound (www.munichfound.de) Expat info website.

Top Tips

  • Visit the Kunstareal on a Sunday when the main venues charge only €1 admission, saving you a fair amount of your holiday money.
  • Only buy a day ticket for the public transport system if you are leaving the Altstadt, as the very centre of Munich is best explored on foot.
  • Save a lot of money by picnicking at beer gardens and just ordering a beer – this is perfectly acceptable as long as you don't sit at a table with a tablecloth and cutlery.
  • If booking tours online from your hotel room, make sure you can print out the tickets somewhere such as hotel reception – if required.
  • If you are not going to Oktoberfest, don't even think about coming to Munich in late September when the city is booked up.

What to Take

  • Sturdy shoes – visits to Munich involve a lot of walking
  • A good penknife with bottle opener
  • UK plug adaptor – they are hard to come by in Munich
  • Picnic blanket/basket for the English Garden and beer gardens

What to Wear

  • Ski gloves, scarf and hat in winter
  • A fleece or jacket for late evenings in beer gardens
  • Smart casual attire if heading to fancy restaurants or the theatre
  • Light cotton clothing between June and September – Munich gets hotter than some expect
  • Lined boots during the months when snow can fall
  • Hiking boots or trail shoes if heading south to the Alps

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay
  • Check the airline baggage restrictions very carefully and not just if flying with a low-cost carrier
  • Inform your bank if you intend usuing your debit card abroad (if required)
  • Arrange appropriate travel insurance for the activities you intend doing (adventure sports etc)
