One of the many tragedies of Hitler’s excursion into megalomania was the horrendous damage inflicted upon once-magnificent architectural gems such as Hildesheim. After WWII, key parts of the old town such as the Marktplatz were lovingly reconstructed in their former style. Here you'll find, (clockwise from north) the Rokokohaus, Wollenweberhaus, Wedekindhaus, Knochenhauerhaus and Bäckeramtshaus.

The Marktbrunnen fountain in front of the Rathaus has a carillon of bells that play folk songs at noon, 1pm and 5pm daily.

Bus 1 from Hauptbahnhof to Rathausstrasse drops you near Marktplatz.
