Hernhutter Sterne Manufaktur

Gifts & Souvenirs in Herrnhut

Now displayed at every other German home over Christmas, the Hernhutter stars – a Christian version of Chinese lanterns – were first produced in the 1850s by children at boarding schools, who regarded them as a symbol of homecoming. You can buy a star for yourself (€15 to €45) in this glassy edifice, where the heir of the original factory is based.

There is a free exhibition on the premises and a show workshop, where you are invited to look over the shoulder of workers producing stars and try your hand at making one.
