Heidelberg’s Altstadt runs along the left (south) bank of the Neckar River from Bismarckplatz east to the hillside Schloss. One of Europe’s longest pedestrian zones, the 1600m-long Hauptstrasse, runs east–west through the Altstadt, about 200m south of the Neckar, passing a series of picturesque public squares, many with historic or modern fountains. Superb views of the town extend from the north (right) bank of the Neckar in Neuenheim.
