In the heart of the city. Excellent transport links and otherwise within walking distance of most attractions.

Not much choice of hotels and next to nothing for budget travellers. Can be touristy.

Neustadt

Centrally located and handy for exploring the city on foot and via excellent train links; also good for sights, shopping and waterfront atmosphere.

Against

Can be touristy. Very little choice for budget travellers. Can be noisy in the downtown area.

St Georg

For

Handy for the main train station and otherwise excellent transport links to rest of city; within walking distance of city centre.

Against

Sleazy atmosphere in the south of St Georg. Can be noisy on weekends.

Speicherstadt & HafenCity

For

Close to museums and within easy walking distance of waterfront and city centre. Most hotels quiet.

Against

Lacks neighbourhood personality. Very little choice for budget travellers.

St Pauli & Reeperbahn

For

Wonderfully vibrant and diverse neighbourhood with great eating and drinking options. Not far to stagger home at the end of a long night.

Against

You'll probably need to take the train to the rest of the city. Can be very noisy, especially on weekends.

Altona & Elbmeile

For

Wonderful neighbourhood feel. Great eating, shopping and dining options. Generally quiet streets make for a good night's sleep.

Against

You'll need to take the train to visit anywhere else in Hamburg.
