If driving, be aware that there are one-way systems all around the Altstadt. Alternatively, there’s parking by the train station.
Braunschweig is at the heart of an integrated transport network that extends throughout the region and as far south as the Harz Mountains. Ninety-minute bus and tram tickets cost €2.50; 24-hour tickets are €5.50; you can buy tickets at service centres at the Hauptbahnhof and near the Rathaus and then validate them on the tram.
Any bus or tram going to ‘Rathaus’ from the Hauptbahnhof (such as tram 1 and bus 420) will get you to the centre in 10 minutes; these leave from just outside the Hauptbahnhof. Tram 5 is useful, connecting the train station with Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz via Am Magnitor and passing the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum. More information is available at www.verkehr-bs.de.
