Flights & getting there
Marshrutky connect Mestia with Ushguli and generally leave Mestia at 10am, arriving by noon in Ushguli, leaving Ushguli at 3pm and getting back by 5pm. Return tickets cost 40 GEL whether you come back the same day or not, but if you return another day, you'll normally have to buy a second ticket. From Ushguli, Marshrutky to Mestia depart from alongside the bridge in Chazhashi.
A taxi or 4WD day trip for up to four people from Mestia costs 200 GEL; one-way trips are only a little less. The road is now paved for most of the way, but still in poor condition for the last 30km. It's normally open year-round except after heavy snow or landslides, but non-4WD vehicles can only manage it from about June to October (and they need high clearance). The rough track on from Ushguli to Lentekhi in Lower Svaneti (75km; via the 2623m Zagar Pass) is passable from about May to September. Four-wheel drives charge 300 GEL for the three-to-four-hour trip.
