Welcome to Gagra

The north end of town, called Staraya Gagra (Old Gagra), is much less built-up and crowded than the south: this was where in the early 20th century Russian Prince Oldenburgsky decided to establish a 'Russian Nice'. Large belle époque buildings dot the hillside, and the beach is backed by the tree-filled Primorsky Park. At the north end of the park the walls of the 4th-to-5th-century AD Abaata fortress enclose some of Oldenburgsky's resort buildings (now again a hotel), the lovely little 6th-century Church of St Ipatius and an interesting small historical museum.
