Health & insurance
Before You Go
Health insurance is recommended for travel in Gabon. Make sure your policy includes emergency evacuation.
It is essential to have an International Health Card proving vaccination against yellow fever. You will be asked to produce this on arrival in Gabon.
Recommended vaccinations include:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Polio, tetanus and diptheria
Start taking malaria prophylactics one to seven days before your trip, depending on the type prescribed.
Availability & Cost of Health Care
Private clinics are found in the major cities and are the best bet if you need emergency medical attention in Gabon. Expect to pay the same as you would in developed countries. Doctors might only speak French, so take a translator if you don't.
Do not drink tap water. Bottled water is widely available, or use sterlisation tablets.
