The Big One
You’ll feel a spiritual buzz at Marae Taputapuatea. Once a meeting place for Polynesians throughout the Pacific, this marae (traditional temple) is still one of the most important and well-preserved ancient temples of its kind.
The tiare apetahi is a delicate five-petalled flower that only grows on the Temehani Plateau in Ra’iatea. To see it you’ll have to make a challenging hike to the summit and hope for good luck – sightings aren’t guaranteed.
What a Wreck
Ra’iatea is home to the Nordby, the only real diveable wreck in French Polynesia. Expect fish and corals but not great visibility.
