Dining choices are unexceptional in this touristy seaside town. Camargue specialities such as gardianne de taureau (bull stew) are easy to find, alongside giant pans of paella. For self-caterers there is one essential stop: the seafront fish market.

Lunch sur la plage (on the beach) never fails to seduce and Stes-Maries-de-la-Mer lives up to the promise with two hip and dandy beach restaurants, Calypso – Lou Santen and La Playa, both open May to September.
