Some walkers skip the railway and hike to the top of Puy de Dôme along the Chemin des Muletiers. The steep 6km path, believed to have once been trodden by pilgrims heading to the Temple de Mercure, takes roughly 1½ hours if you start from the lower Panoramique station, or half that if you begin at the Col de Ceyssat Parking.
