Welcome to Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors
In this 2062-sq-km mosaic of oak forests, highland plateaux and serrated peaks, rewards are rich for lovers of nature. Chamois perch on cliffs, 75 different types of orchid peep out from tree roots, and birds of prey soar above. There's also history pocketed in the limestone: numerous caves were hideouts for the French Resistance during WWII. Hikers can ply 3000km of trails or, come winter, strap on snowshoes and follow a guide through snow-blanketed meadows.
It's easy to dip into the park from Grenoble, just a few kilometres northeast. Approaching from the west, Pont-en-Royans makes a good base.
