Summer brings walkers, winter draws snowboarders and skiers, and shoulder seasons are sleepy across the parc.
Find easy, family-friendly walks at Lac Pavin (near Besse), Lac Chambon (near Murol) and Volvic. Trekkers with a good level of fitness should consider Murat, Salers and Orcival as bases. The Col de Guéry's wild terrain is best suited to hardened hikers in search of solitude.
Winter sports fans hurtle down the pistes in Super-Besse and Le Mont-Dore, but there is also a small ski station in the south of the region, Le Lioran near Murat. Despite snow-making machines, good conditions aren't guaranteed, so check the weather and ask at tourist offices before committing to gear hire.
