Worth a Trip: Alba-la-Romaine
A mere 17km (25 minutes by car) west of Montélimar is Alba-la-Romaine, a hilltop gem of sleepy medieval streets. The village is exceptionally well preserved, with small higgledy-piggledy stone houses, winding lanes and historic buildings, including an 11th-century castle. There are a few art galleries, cafes and shops.
The 'Romaine' part refers to a magnificently restored archaeological site about 1km north of the village. Here you'll find the excavated remains of a Roman city, complete with a temple, a theatre and a Cardo maximus (Roman main street), as well as a recently opened archaeological museum that displays everyday objects along with some exceptional pieces found on the site, including mosaics and magnificent statues.
