Worth a Trip: Gourmet St-Bonnet-le-Froid

Renowned French chef Régis Marcon has sprinkled Michelin-starred magic across the little village of St-Bonnet-le-Froid, 20km northeast of Le Puy-en-Velay. The thrice Michelin star-awarded chef operates hotels and restaurants here, including Restaurant Régis et Jacques Marcon (menus €135-210). Rather more affordable is La Coulemelle, where earthy flavours (like the mushroom of the bistro's name) come to the fore. Expect indulgent takes on French bistro classics, like pork cheek in red wine and roasted rabbit, always with vegetarian options such as tartare of Le Puy lentils and cauliflower felafel.

It's best to visit St-Bonnet in summer. Note that there isn't much going on in January and February: restaurants close and the (unsalted) roads may be perilous in snowy conditions.
