Camargue in detail

Getting Around

Touring the tiny roads criss-crossing this flat, wild region is best done by car or bicycle. For the Marseille-bound, the Bac de Barcarin provides a car ferry (€5) across the Grand Rhône from Salin de Giraud.

Bicycles are ideal on the Camargue's flat terrain. East of Stes-Maries-de-la-Mer, seafront paths like Digue à la Mer are reserved for walkers and cyclists. Le Vélo Saintois, with an English-language list of cycling routes, rents bikes of all sizes. Le Vélociste rents and organises cycling and horse-riding (€36) or cycling and canoeing (€30) packages. Both deliver bikes for free to hotels throughout the Camargue.
