Aside from the niche, seasonal Musée du Ski, Besse has few attractions; the pleasure of visiting is in strolling the historic centre, a dream of pebbled lanes and basalt townhouses. One monumental gateway remains today, crowned by the octagonal 16th-century Beffroy, the town's most distinctive feature. Lift your gaze to the top and you'll see an old wolf's-head weathervane still trembling in the wind. Fourteen signs mark a walking trail around ramparts and buildings of note; get a free map from the tourist office.
