Glide down 43km of downhill pistes at Super Besse (1350-1800m), 7km west of Besse off D978. Better suited to intermediate skiers than the Mont-Dore side, Besse offers lift passes for weekenders as well as two-hour ski tickets (adult/child €23/16.10) if you only want a quick taster. This isn't among France's most snow-sure areas so check online webcams before venturing out.
Snow conditions won't be great early or late in the season, but snow-making machines top up 70% of the terrain.
Shuttle buses connect Super-Besse with Besse town (one way adult/child €1.60/1) hourly during school holidays and seven times daily during the rest of the ski season. There is night skiing at least weekly, ask at the tourist office.
