French in Annecy

The vintage-inspired decor and bar-side tables scream ‘brasserie’, but l’Étage, within a 17th-century building, has loftier aspirations, serving sophisticated interpretations of traditional recipes. Great-value menus offer French classics, while à la carte choices include truffled fondue and farçon savoyard (a ham-wrapped savoury potato cake). Inconsistent service is the only downside, but on the whole L’Étage deserves its excellent local reputation.
