Welcome to Ambert
Mentioning Ambert is guaranteed to make fromage fanatics reach hungrily for a cheese knife. This sleepy town on the River Dore, 30km north of La Chaise-Dieu, is best known for Fourme d'Ambert, made using one of France's oldest cheese recipes. Sampling this tangy blue cheese in its namesake town is the main reason for visiting, though Ambert is also a potential jumping-off point for further exploration of the Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez's sleepy stone villages.
Back in the 16th century, Ambert boasted more than 300 water-powered mills meeting the demands of the French paper industry, and you can visit a restored mill, 4km east of town.
