Getting Around

Getting around between major towns and cities such as Strasbourg, Colmar, Metz, Mulhouse and Nancy is a breeze with excellent and speedy rail connections (see www.sncf.com for timetables and itineraries).

Public transport slows to a trickle in places further off the beaten track, such as some of the villages on the Route des Vins d'Alsace, the Massif des Vosges and the Verdun battlefields, where having a car is a definite advantage. The A4 motorway links Strasbourg in Alsace with Metz in Lorraine, before swinging north to Paris. Michelin's 516 Alsace & Lorraine road map (€6.95) covers the region at a scale of 1:200,000.
